Exhibition Review

Paintings by Nosratollah Moslemian

Nosratollah Moslemian is one of the most well-known modernist artists in today’s Iranian contemporary art whose works have been exhibited internationally and has received awards. His artistic and intellectual path, similar to many other Iranian artists in has shifted from realistic works in political and social contexts to more personal ones, though referring to social realities in his works is considered as one of their unique characteristics till today.

The works displayed at this exhibition can be divided into two categories: works that are bigger and more abstract that color is used in them and smaller works that are more decorative. It seems that the specific connection with the social contexts that is mentioned in the statement has more happened with the smaller works than the large ones.

The large works are more like former works of artist done in 2016 and the abstract works come from his modernist context which the audience who is not known to the visual art ambient might not make a tangible connection with. However, Moslemian has also been influenced by the expressionist movement and his earlier works were more linked to this context.

The small works are more expressive and the manifestation of the artist’s personal emotions in them interact with the social and historical facts.
